TEAM 5 – CAN/AUS/SWE

About the team

The young, fun, and capable endurance racing team that combines the Australian adventure racing duo of Mitch Nissen and Hilary Bell with the outstanding Swedish racer Marcus Hultgren and support crew of Mikael Morin. Hilary is a phenomenal racer and ex-Canadian professional swimmer; Mitch is an experienced navigator, swimmer, and expedition racer; Marcus is a full-time endurance racer and Mikael is an experienced ÖtillÖ athlete with the local knowledge and navigation skills as support crew during the race.

We are constantly seeking the next challenge that provides the environment for us to grow. One Water Race sets the standard for the ultimate endurance test. We want to be pushed harder than ever before. We love the outdoors and believe the natural environment needs to be preserved for current and future generations. We want to be a part of the One Water movement that encourages preservation of our precious natural resources and awareness of the water crisis while enjoying and appreciating the beautiful world on which we are temporary guests.

Q&A

– Why do you want participate in One Water Race?

We are constantly seeking the next challenge that provides the environment for us to grow. One Water sets the standard for the ultimate endurance test.

– What would be your biggest challenge as a team?

We need to overcome unknown obstacles that could arise from extreme fatigue, cold, and unknown course routes. To do this requires us to overcome another challenge: establishing team cohesion with a culturally diverse team in a short period of time - although we are confident we can work through this based on our recent race experience.

– What are your goals in participating in One Water Race?

Our goal is to achieve perfect team cohesion and flow so that we can produce our best performance - that magic feeling where the whole team functions as a single organism with a common goal, where strengths and weaknesses are balanced to produce a top performance. Achieving this goal is the cornerstone to our secondary goals, to finish the course and to win.

We suggest that he sings a song, but all he can think of is psalms. We wade through swamps, get attacked by vast amounts of mosquitos that we whip with spruce debris."

By this time the news of Team 7 pulling out of the race had come through to us. This just reinforced our focus on our own routines; eating and drinking and just kept moving towards Landsort."

Soon we were happy to be on Ornö to take on the challenge of a long hard run and orienteering with sleepy minds. As we reached CP9 Robban told us the hard facts; we are now 6h behind and we need to speed up."

Around 3am, I got tired and we made a change of lead navigator and I handed off the maps, and as we all know from adventure racing this never ends well… we ended up far south, off the current map that we had. It was beautiful and nice trails, the sun was rising, when we got to a point and realized something was off, there shouldn’t have been a cove and boat on our right. All of the sudden Kristen zipped down on the boat and said guys you are way off."

Zipping across the island to CP3, passing Team 1, arriving in fourth just behind Team 4. Hyped up and ready to carry this momentum, we were made to wait for our boat to arrive before the maps could be released for Stage 3. We watched Team 4 leave the CP and disappear out of sight as we waited."
