Q&A
– Why do you want to participate?
When Jason told me about One Water Race, I was intrigued from the beginning. I played hard to get at first (not really), but combining the epicness of the physicality with the team aspect as well as bringing awareness to environmental concerns had me hooked.
As someone who loves challenges, this is something that truly challenges your body and mind for a good cause. I come from an individual sport, so the team aspect of adventure racing is truly special... then add in two events I am very confident about, trusting your body to move over land and water, I am excited to meet this challenge as a team.
When the purpose transcends individual goals, that is when the magic happens.
– Have you taken a similar challenge before?
I have raced all over the world, including Sweden at Diamond League Track events - but never have I raced in this format. I have done shorter adventure racing events as well as Expedition Oregon last year, so I am learning more on how to better pace and prepare myself. But this epic swim-run is a horse of a completely different color!
– What are your strengths?
As a seasoned racer of the highest level, handling pressure and staying positive is definitely one of my biggest strengths. I don't know how to quit. From my bio, running is my biggest strength especially moving fast. I grew up swimming which many don't know about as well. And I have an iron stomach.
– What are your weaknesses?
I am most nervous about the cold and being wet all the time. At 105 pounds, I don't have much extra fat! Sleep deprivation is also a weakness I learned about in my first expedition race, this is something I will have to plan and be strategic about. Moving slow is also my weakness as it makes me more sleepy.
– What will be your biggest challenge?
Definitely the cold water, especially combined with sleep deprivation.
– Have you been to the Stockholm archipelago?
I have raced in Sweden, and Stockholm in particular, but I have never been to the archipelago. Extensively seeing and exploring this amazing area is definitely something I am looking forward to.
– What do you know/think about the terrain?
I am expecting cold, rougher waters with rocky and varied terrain over land. A mix of everything on foot is exciting to me as a road/track/trail/mountain runner, as well as the unknown aspect of the water conditions.
– What are you most looking forward to?
Experiencing this challenge with my amazing team, and learning more about this area as well as about ourselves and our teammates throughout the journey. None of us have ever run and swam this far! We rise up when we rise together. I also am hoping I get to tow some of the boys at some point on foot (though I know they will return the favor in the water!).
