– What other experiences do you have that demonstrates your competence and ability to complete One Water Race?
70 some-odd plus other races including triathlons, running, cycling, and adventure races as well as USAT World Championships in Hamburg, Germany, 27 day Arctic sea-kayaking expedition in Norway and Ironman World Championships Kona.
– Why do you want to participate in One Water Race?
After such an incredible experience in 2022, I'm honored to return and give it another shot with two new team mates. I loved the community and the archipelago was breath-taking… literally, like aLOT! The simplicity of the sport and the beauty of the archipelago are huge draws plus I get to enjoy more of my wife’s doodles on the maps and stuff my face with more Swedish fika.
– Have you taken a similar challenge before?
Yes, in 2022 my wife and I traveled with our 3-year-old to Sweden for the OWR and Team 7 gave our best effort until we were pulled off. We were nowhere near Arholma but the hunger to reach that lighthouse has not subsided.
– What are your strengths?
Eating lots of waffles, big hugs, and maintaining a positive outlook while finding a way to continue to grind. I love logistics and am a quick learner so hopefully, we can make some improvements on our 2022 performance.
– What are your weaknesses?
My fingers get really cold, I get frustrated when I can’t use them, and then I swear I am not going to spend time in cold water ever again. Furthermore, thinking clearly after no sleep and having my chin chafe my shoulder while breathing.
– What would be your biggest challenges in this race?
Hopefully it won’t be sipping too much salty water and struggling to keep food down or from coming up or out. I know keeping warm and remaining mentally and emotionally tough when a curveball comes our way.
– Have you been to the Stockholm archipelago and what do you know/think about the terrain?
My time during OWR in 2022 was beautiful and I dream of going back and experiencing the beauty again. Before that I spent a week in Stockholm in 2015 before heading up to Northern Norway and kayaking in the fjords for a month. I was surprised at how tricky it was to navigate the terrain. Not being able to see through tall grasses, ankle-breaking tundra potholes, slippery rocks, and of course the electric fences all make the course special. There are plenty of surprises that will keep us on our toes and engaged with the beauty around us.
– What are you most looking forward to, if you would participate in One Water Race?
I am most looking forward to experiencing the camaraderie and energy of the swim-run and OWR community. I love that I get to share this experience with my wife and family and two world-class competitors, in a one-of-a-kind backdrop. I love squeaking out every bit of myself and our team and am excited for the dawn and dusk swims. I am elated to be racing for something much bigger than myself and my team and hope to share the enthusiasm with others.
